25 YEARS OF 19TH SEPTEMBER 1984 STRIKE
41 YEARS OF 19TH SEPTEMBER 1968 STRIKE
Two One-Day Token Strikes that had a very far reaching impact on the Central Government Employees and P&T Employees were launched on the same day – 19th September – in the years 1968 and 1984.
!968 Strike was called upon by the entirety of Central Government Employees movement to protest against the omission of 'Need Based Minimum Wage' in the terms and reference of Third Pay Commission and the refusal of the Government to even refer this dispute to Arbitration.
1984 Strike was called upon by the All India Postal Employees Union Postmen, Class IV and EDAs under the leadership of Comrade Adinarayana to highlight the sufferings of three lakhs of ED Employees. It was the first strike in the history of the P&T Movement launched only for the cause of ED Employees.
These two strikes – organized far and wide in the movement – have different indelible impact on the trade union movement. The 1968 Strike and the victimization that strike was subjected to by the Government was the last industrial action launched unitedly by the entirety of Central Government Employees. After that no joint strike by the whole of CG Employees movement has been launched till this date for 41 years even though there were many glorious indefinite strikes by different sections independently. Many times united strike calls were given but some kind of pre-strike settlement always prevented the launching of strike. But even today the memory of 19th September 1968 Strike plays an emotional part in the life of CG Employees Movement and the movement had never forgotten to remember the sacrifices of our forefathers on that historic day.
While the 1968 Strike denotes the last united strike by CG Employees , the 19th September 1984 Strike denotes the beginning of a new wave of strikes and struggles by the Postal as well as the Telecom Employees movement. The stagnation in organizing strikes started since 1968 was once broken by the Postmen Union Strike of 1984 for the cause of ED Employees, there is no dearth of one-day or indefinite strikes in both Postal and Telecom.
The 1968 Strike completes 41 years –
The 1984 Strike completes 25 years –
Let the Movement of NFPE remember the martyrs of 19th September 1968 Strike and the forerunners of 19th September 1984 Strike on this 19th September 2009 –
Hold Appropriate Meetings in a most befitting manner to convey the history of our great movement to the younger generations on that day. Invite the Senior Leaders of the movement who led the both the above strikes and honour them – Honour to those senior leaders is a honour to our tradition and movement itself. Let this 19th September 2009 mark a new beginning of consolidating the unity and united movement of Postal Regular Employees and Gramin Dak Sewaks.
LONG LIVE THE MEMORIES OF 19TH SEPTEMBER
